Benn bags victory brace at Donington Park
Bourne’s Benn Tilley was in sensational form in a race meeting at Donington Park last weekend.
Competing in a 1971 Merlyn Mk20a Formula Ford, Tilley recorded two victories after claiming a pair of pole positions and a brace of fastest laps.
He said: “All in all it was a great weekend. Quite a few of the other cars on the grid were nearly 10 years newer than the car I was driving so it was a great achievement.”
Tilley took pole position in qualifying after finishing just 0.090-hundredths of a second ahead of his closest challenger.
The first race started with an early battle with Ben Tinkler who was driving a 1980 Van Diemen RF80 Formula Ford.
Tilley eventually managed to break away from Tinkler and got the lead which, by the end of the race, he had extended to 3.5 seconds for victory and the fastest lap.
Tilley managed to get a great start off the grid in the second race and started to get a good lead on Tinkler who was again in second place.
However, halfway through the race, a safety car had to be deployed because of an accident and cars needed to be cleared off the track.
The racers followed the safety car for a couple of laps before it went in which meant Tilley had to start all over again with Tinkler still on his tail.
But he kept his head down and managed to pull away from Tinkler, eventually gaining a 5.3 second lead with another win and fastest lap.
The next round of the Formula Ford event takes place at Mallory Park in August.
Tilley has also been offered a drive in a 1962 Lola Formula Junior car which will be at the prestigious Silverstone Classic meeting in July. This should be a great experience with a lot of competition.
