There will be a thrilling climax to the Rutland Division One season as league leaders Uppingham Town travel to Peterborough Town in a winner-takes-all battle for the title at Bretton Gate on Sunday.

Peterborough, who clinched their third Northants Premier Division title in a row last Saturday, set up another title decider by surviving some nervy moments in their penultimate game at Barnack on Sunday. Town were 50-5 chasing Barnack’s 134 before 16 year-old David Sayer (52no) saw his side home by three wickets with some meaty blows.

Town’s 20-point haul means they go into this weekend’s game eight points behind Uppingham who have led the table for most of the season. Town will field a strong side and any sort of win should deliver a fourth Division One title in five years.

Sayer also dismissed Barnack dangermen Asim Butt, a Peterborough star in the Northants Premier Division, and Zeeshan Manzoor during a spell of 2-26 in seven overs. Opener Tas Ahmed (60no) batted throughout Barnack’s innings which included a late spell of crafty left-arm spin bowling from Callum French (3-19).

Peterborough lost some big hitters early in their innings but French (27) and Marcus Howard (21) offered useful batting support to young Sayer. Sohail Mohammed (4-30) bowled well for Barnack.

Uppingham were not in action on Sunday as they had a game in hand so had to agonisingly watch as their rivals closed in on them.

Bourne will finish third despite their four-wicket defeat at Oundle on Sunday. Conrad Louth struck 60 for a Bourne side with hangovers following their Lincs Premier Division title success 24 hours earlier, but their 204-9 was rendered inadequate by Jack Bolsover (82) and Petrus Jeftha (49). Young Bolsover also claimed three wickets.

Nassington finished their Division One season with a six-wicket win at Eaton Socon as Tom Norman (79no) found some form, while Wisbech also finished their season in style by hammering Market Overton by six wickets. Gary Freear blasted 84 from 43 balls as Wisbech sped past the relegated club’s 149.
