Wet weather tyres would have been more appropriate than running shoes last Sunday at Rockingham Speedway Circuit, Corby for the Brass Monkey 10k.
The annual race in support of Lakelands Hospice is held at the end of the January and as the name suggests, the weather gods can be unkind for the competitors.
This year may not have been as bad as previous years, but there was still a fine misty rain, a stiff breeze and cold temperatures to provide the runners and spectators with challenging conditions.
Before the main event there was a 1.5 mile family fun run which comprises a single lap of the circuit.
Young 11-year old Samuel Gordon-Kerr from Ketton Panthers Triathlon Club was the first to cross the line in this event, so an excellent Rutland start to the morning’s racing.
There was a nice turnout from Rutland Running and Triathlon Club for the main 10k event with 14 members pounding round just over four laps of the race circuit.
There was certainly a strong female contingent from the club. Lara Kristiensen was first home for the club and eighth lady in a time of 43:18. Helen Pape was next to finish in 44:45 with Martin Gordon-Kerr not far behind in 45:05.
The final club standings were: Lara Kristiansen, 59th, 43:18; Helen Pape, 77th, 44:45; Martin Gordon-Kerr 81st, 45:05; Paul Rogerson, 144th, 49:26; Helen Duncan, 166th, 50:49; Megg Humphrey, 176th, 51:26; Andrea Gordon-Kerr, 205th, 52:50; Simon Murton, 223rd,53:55; Jenny Pearson, 275th, 57:20; Felicity Crotty, 287th, 57:53; Jo Smith, 316th, 60:00; Celia Bloor, 325th, 60:57; Kate Howes, 341st, 62:21; Tracey Poole, 405th, 70:43; Amanda McPherson, 406th, 70:43.
This was the first race in the annual club championship and after age grading Jo Smith is leading the Ladies’ Championship with Paul Rogerson heading up the Men’s. The next race in the series is the Belvoir Challenge at the end of February.
The club is always looking for new members who will receive a warm welcome.
