Oakham Tennis Club’s Men’s and Women’s teams have began their Winter seasons again with a win, a draw and a loss.
The Ladies 1sts began their campaign at Leicestershire LTC where Debbie Powell and Ana Weber were able to show their strengths as they won three of the four sets they played. This was the first time they had partnered each other this year, but they worked well together to force errors from their hosts. However, Oakham’s second strings – Jackie Staines and Catherine Drury - were unable to play their usual game after Jackie slipped and fell, which prevented her from running, with the team going down 3-5.
The Ladies 2nds went to Belvoir Vale and came home with a great 7-1 win. Jane Gilmore and Laura Reekie played steadily throughout with minor glitches to win all four sets. Carolyn Davies and Mel Jarret started slowly against the host’s 1st pair and lost a close tie-break before moving up a gear to take the second set 6-1. They had no problems against the 2nd pair as they produced their deep penetrating shots to the baselines.
Dan Potter has entered the Men into the league again after a break last year. He is keen to get the younger players into the trials and tribulations of the doubles game and they haven’t let him down. They took on Newton Linford at The Vale and earned a creditable draw.
Newcomer to Oakham tennis Jason Young partnered Connor Molyneux. They worked well together winning three sets. Dan took 13-year-old Harvey Seel into the fray and once settled, Harvey began to enjoy the games. They won one set against the 2nds but found the visitor’s 1sts rather more experienced for them.
The club continues at The Vale with regular ‘Mix-in’ sessions on Mondays and Thursdays 9am – 11am.
