Rutland Running and Tri Club member Bryan Clary took part in the MTB Dusk til Dawn bike event last weekend.

This was a 12 hour Mountain Bike challenge staged at Thetford Forest in Norfolk. The event saw solo riders, pairs or small teams of 3 or 4 trying to complete as many laps of a 9 mile off-road course through the forest starting at 8pm on Saturday and finishing at 8am the following day.

Clary managed 10 laps of the course effectively covering 88.9 miles, according to his Strava account, in 11hrs 22mins 55secs and finishing 25th out of the 85 in the solo males category.

He said: “The dusk till dawn was great - the equinox but on bikes.

“As I was a solo I was being overtaken by all the fast riders in groups and I was getting the ‘well done’! They gave all solos snap lights to go on under the saddle and at the briefing it was said that ‘solos are expected to be erratic at from 2am onwards so give them space.”

Everyone really helped the solos which I was surprised about considering the first 4 laps were in silence (although the start/finish line was noisy). Really good atmosphere as the race continued especially at 4am with the moon, mist and frost. The organisers put random things in the woods like lights, skeletons and one section of narrow pine track 1m wide with snap lights on the branches for around 40m with classical music playing from hidden speakers. This was about 3 miles in and quite cool!
