BMX racing’s rising star Ryan Hutchinson went shoulder to shoulder with some of the best riders in Europe at the weekend and more than held his own.

The Thurlby cyclist is top of the British rankings for his age group after a storming season and took a step up in competition at the weekend when he raced in rounds 9 and 10 of the European BMX championships, held at Birmingham BMX club.

There was a good turn-out of European riders including riders from Belgium, France, Germany and Lithuania.

Hutchinson’s age 16 category had a stacked line-up of quality riders and after running through the motos, quarters, and semi-finals, Hutchinson qualified for an A final on the Saturday alongside some of the top riders in Europe.

The final was always going to be exciting as the world number four was alongside him on the gate.

Hutchinson got out of the gate poorly and was fifth going into the first corner, but after a slick move on the inside he moved up to third position keeping low to the berm and hanging on to keep his third position to secure a place on the podium.

On Sunday, Hutchinson produced similar form, again qualifying through the motos for an A final, but sadly it didn’t go to plan as he spun out of the gate, getting himself boxed in and although he gave it his best shot, and was still pleased to have made the A final, finished last.

Ryan races this weekend in Ipswich and the following weekend is racing in Derby in rounds 6 and 7 of the BMX national series.

The countdown is now on for the Worlds with just weeks to go. Hutchinson travels to Rotterdam on July 22 to 27 for the competition.
