Stamford AFC pulled off a second half recovery to take all three points in their Evo-Stik Northern Premier League opener at home to Workington on Saturday.

Two second half Ryan Robbins goals in the space of four minutes earned the Daniels a 2-1 victory in front of a crowd of 296 at the Vic Couzens Stadium.

In a relatively stale first half the only action happened in the 9th minute when Workington’s Connor Thomson’s shot was tipped over for a corner.

Connor Tinnion’s corner was scooped by Kyle May into the roof of the net to give the Cumbrians an early lead unfortunately for May his afternoon ended in a trip to hospital with a suspected dislocated shoulder.

Stamford stormed out in the second half and the introduction of last season’s top goalscorer Robbins proved the difference.

The Daniels when close wjem Ryan Clarke headed the ball onto Matt Cotton and his cross found Jon Challinor who could only skew his shot over the bar under pressure.

Stamford equalised in the 69th minute when Ellis Myles won a free kick 20 yards out. Robbins teed it up and his shot deflected off the wall giving the Workington keeper Jonnie Jamieson no chance as he was diving the other way.

Myles then went close when he cut inside and shot for goal, hitting the post. Agonisingly the ball flew across goal out of any Stamford players’ reach.

Myles was then architect for the second. The defender went on a mazy run beating several challenges to play Robbins in square, the striker took a touch and rifled in a shot from the edge of the area.

A late scare came in the 92nd minute when a Workington corner was met by an unmarked Daniel Wordsworth but his header was well wide and the Daniels held on for the win.

Summer signings Myles’ outstanding performance saw he named man of the match.

Stamford are in fourth position in the league after the opening weekend, they are away to Matlock tomorrow (Tuesday).
