New management looking to make an impact with Baston


Baston FC enter their ninth season in existence and fourth season in the PDFL league structure this weekend with an away trip to old friends Coates Athletic Reserves FC.

Having completed their title winning campaign with a 3-0 victory at Coates last season it is familiar ground for The Goats.

The close season has seen yet another change in the management team at Baston, with Leighton Atkin departing for Peterborough ICA Sports.

Baston interviewed for the role but opted to appoint from within with players favourite and former Reserve team manager Rob Clarke stepping up to the first team. Rob has been joined by all time club top scorer Craig Bullivant as his assistant. The Reserves sees Shaun Dennis enter into his first management role assisted by club Stalwart Phil Davies.

New first team manager Clarke said: “I’m looking forward to the challenge and the clubs maiden season in Division One. “We aim to make an impact and consolidate our position in the division. The club has a five year plan and is currently on track to achieve that.”

From last seasons double winning squad only two players have departed, Tom Palmer to Deeping Rangers and James Simpson to Glinton. Clarke said the club wish both players well at their new clubs.

The club have recruited a host of new players including Ben Cowles formally of Deeping Rangers, Rory Ablewhite of Bourne Town and Tom Bedford of Blackstones.

They also welcome back from long term injuries John MacLeod, Jimmy Younghusband, Mike Hasler and Scott Clay.

Baston’s pre-season has seen a mixed bag of results as the new management team seek to view all players and make their mark on the squad tactically.

Results include:

5-2 win v Pinchbeck Utd

3-2 loss v Ketton FC

2-1 win v Crowland Town

3-1 loss v PSL Reserves
