Cottesmore Amateurs are shaping up well for a good season, as the Rutland side continue to notch up pre-season wins with their strong new squad.
On Tuesday Cottesmore beat local rivals Uppingham 2-0 thanks to goals from Robbie Preira and new signing Robbie Aldridge, who has joined the club from Melton Town.
Amateurs played with pace and accuracy for long spells on Tuesday and well be a considerable test for most sides in Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division.
The victory came on the back of the heels of a 4-1 win over Holwell Sports on Thursday night, when Ondre Fontura, Jordan Smith and Adam Wright got the goals and the Amateurs were helped with an own goal.
Cottesmore kick off their league campaign away to Desford on August 16, after playing their final pre-season fixture against Bilborough Town on Saturday.
Uppingham, like Rutland neighbours Oakham, were also involved in Groundhop weekend, playing on Saturday afternoon but they had a less successful start to the new PDFL season, losing 3-1 to Riverside on Sunday.
Town went behind early when Samuel Donohoe punished a poor clearance kick. Uppingham were unlucky not to be level at the break, striking the bar twice , but just before the break Riverside’s Thomas Lancaster added a second.
In the second half Jamie Binley pulled a goal back for Uppingham but any hope of a revival was ended when goalkeeper Tom Hubbard was shown red for fouling the Riverside striker inside the box when the two were one-on-one. Goalscorer Binley moved between the sticks but could not keep out Antonio dello Russo’s penalty effort.
