Bourne United Charities has purchased Wake House in Bourne to secure its future for the benefit of people in the town.
The charity has been negotiating with the building’s former owner South Kesteven District Council for about two years and finally managed to reach an agreement two weeks ago.
The charity has granted Bourne Arts and Community Trust a long lease, which will mean the trust can secure funding to carry out the work necessary to keep it in good repair.
The trust will continue to manage and determine the development of Wake House in North Street to allow more groups and individuals to use the building, which is in North Street.
The trust initially approached Bourne United Charities with a view to either loaning the money for the purchase or purchasing it on their behalf. Prior to that, the trust had been in negotiations with the district council over the future of the building for many years.
Greg Cejer is a company secretary and trustee of Bourne Arts and Community Trust. He said: “We are extremely pleased that an agreement has finally been reached which secures the future of the building.”
Greg said the trust would now be looking to apply for grants with a view to “restoring the building to its former glory within the context of what is affordable”.
He said the first priority would be to refurbish the outside of the building and to promote it to get more groups and individuals using it.
Wake House is already used by a number of community groups and Greg said some days it is “chock-a-block” with people but some days it is quieter.
David Mapp is a trustee of Bourne United Charities and led the purchase.
He was equally delighted an agreement had finally been reached, saying: “I think Bourne United Charities have been able to achieve something that will make a positive difference in the community and enable the trust to continue the good work they do in Bourne.”
A spokesman for SKDC said: “Bourne United Charities has purchased Wake House from the authority.
“We are delighted the building has a new local charity owner to look after its future.”
