Reaction to news of earthquake felt across Rutland

We’ve been busy getting reaction to the news of an earthquake in the area this morning (Thursday).

Tremors were mainly felt in Oakham and across Rutland at about 7am but residents as far as Bourne, Gunthorpe and Peterborough have also experienced the quake, as well as Stamford and the Deepings.

A seismologist from the British Geological Survey described the tremor as measuring 3.2 on the UK scale.

The news was trending on Twitter as scores of people took to the site to share their experiences.

Former England and Leicester Tigers rugby player Austin Healey, who tweets as ‏@IamAustinHealey, said: “We’ve just had an earthquake in #oakham the house was shaking for about 10secs.”

Tom Scott, a partner of family run business Swans of Oakham, also tweeted the news. Speaking to us, he said: “I just assumed they were digging up the road next door in High Street but then I thought ‘Christ, that would be early’.

“The dogs started going bonkers downstairs and the wardrobe started shaking.

“Last time there was a tremor two or three of our mirrors smashed in the store but thankfully everything is fine this time.”
