A developer says more than 90 per cent of people at a public exhibition were in favour of plans for a new discount supermarket.
Temple Garth and Lidl invited people to see their plans for a new store off the A15 roundabout in Bourne, next to the new McDonald’s, earlier this month.
Hundreds turned up, and more than 500 feedback forms were filled in.
The two companies analysed what was said and released the results this week. Of those who gave their feedback, 92.4 per cent were in favour of the store, 6.2 per cent reservations but were in favour and just 1.4 per cent were against.
A Lidl spokesman said: “We were thrilled with the turnout for the consultation day, and the overwhelming positive response we have received from the local community to our proposal.
“The building of a new store would be of great benefit to the local area, creating up to 40 new jobs and bringing more choice to local residents. We look forward to working with the developers Temple Garth in the hope of turning our hopes and plans into reality.”
Some concerns about the proposed store were raised at the exhibition. They included increased traffic, public transport and car parking.
Temple Garth has taken the feedback on board and amended its designs. Speaking on behalf of the firm, Stuart Mitchell said “We are extremely grateful to all those people who have taken the time to consider the draft proposals for a new Lidl Supermarket at the Gateway Park site in South Road, Bourne. As a direct result of the points raised, we are increasing parking numbers and looking at provision for cyclists among a number of revisions being made.”
“Feedback has also showed that there is a significant number of local residents who already choose to shop at Lidl and are currently travelling to the surrounding stores located in Stamford, Spalding and Peterborough.”
Temple Garth has also set up an online petition where people can show their support for the plans. So far 286 people have signed. Visit www.gopetition.com/petitions/proposed-new-lidl-supermaket-south-road-bourne.html
