A police officer has given up his day job to concentrate on a mobile phone app that makes life easier for other coppers on the beat.

Paul Cooper was a police officer in Spalding but has decided to leave his day job after an app he designed - Pocket Sergeant - was downloaded more than 20,000 times.

The app was launched in 2014 but last year saw a huge change in its fortunes with it winning a silver award in the Mobile App category at the Cambridgeshire Digital Awards, which it has been shortlisted for again this year.

The app has been shortlisted for other awards, both locally and nationally, including in the Best Innovative App category at the Appster Awards in October.

He has also been nominated as a finalist in the Digital Innovation in the Public Sector and Digital Startup of the Year at the Digital Entrepreneur Awards.

Paul, who lives in Market Deeping, said: “I am thrilled yet again for Pocket Sergeant to be competing with some of the biggest and best in digital.

“At the recent Appster Awards finals, also competing were multi-million pound companies such as BT and Easyjet. It is surreal to think a tool designed to help others has spiralled into something much bigger than I anticipated.

“On a daily basis, I helped a handful of people in my role as a police officer. Now I can help in excess of 20,000. There is no better feeling.”

Pocket Sergeant enables its users to search through an A-Z list of criminal law definitions, learn whether there is sufficient evidence to charge a suspect, and find out when a crime report should be submitted.

Originally created as a time management tool for police officers, but is also attracting attention from civilian staff and legal teams.

Paul is still working with Middlesborough-based app developers, Sockmonkey Studios to add new features.

Priced as £3.99, Pocket Sergeant is currently available on the Apple and Google Play Stores. Find out more at www.pocketsergeant.co.uk
