Since the 1980s, fundraiser Nellie Sanders, from Bourne has put her heart and soul into raising money for both local and national causes.
A real life ‘superwoman’, Nellie has raised tens of thousands of pounds over the last 35 years by hosting a number of fabulous lunches for the people of Bourne - a popular event amongst the community.
Now, aged 92 years old, Nellie has decided that this coming lunch will be her last event.
“I wish I could carry on, but I’ve not got the stamina any more,” she said.
Nellie will host her final lunch on Sunday, September 20 at Bourne Abbey Church from 12.30pm.
Nellie said: “This will unfortunately be my last lunch, but it’s been marvellous.
“When you see how much is raised at each of the events, you don’t feel proud for yourself, but you feel proud of everyone that’s helped to raise those funds.”
Nellie has raised money for a number of causes over the years.
She first started fundraising for Cancer Research back in the 80s, following the death of her first husband and has since gone on to raise money for the cancer charity and a number of other charities both local and national.
“We’ve helped a lot of people over the years, and I will continue to do so,” said Nellie.
“I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my helpers. They know who they are and I would like to say a big thank you to them.”
As well as supporting a number of charities, Nellie has always been there to support her family. Over the years different members of her close family have taken on their own personal fundraising challenges, of which Nellie has helped to support at her lunches.
This year, Nellie’s son, Brian McLean is taking on a 1,000 mile bike ride in aid of Water Aid and the British Heart Foundation - the two charities which the funds from next week’s lunch will go towards.
Nellie is particularly sad that this lunch will be her last as she has met so many good people over the years.
She said: “It’s nearly unbearable to think that I won’t be doing it anymore, I will really miss it.
“I do hope someone will carry it on, it’s been very enjoyable and lots of fun. Once I have all of this spare time on my hands I’ll be able to attend the lunches myself as a guest!”
To purchase a ticket for the final lunch, at the price of £10, please telephone Nellie on 01778 421574.
