A group that was formed earlier this year to help elderly people keep warm through the winter has received a £10,000 Lottery grant.
Draught Busters was set up by Sustainable Stamford, in partnership with the Evergreen Care Trust. It received the grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All scheme.
The group aims to support elderly people living in Stamford and the surrounding areas with a service that will help save energy and make homes warmer.
The grant funding will mean the Draught Busters team can supply local people with basic draught proofing and energy efficient light bulbs in order to lower their energy bills.
The Draught Busting team will complete an energy audit on each home followed by free material fitting.
If further energy saving items are required, the team will also help clients access additional grants if where they are eligible.
The service is run by trained and fully vetted volunteers, who have already been carrying out free energy audits.
So far there has been a great response.
John Polkinghorne, a member of the Draught Buster team, added: “Our aim is to help reduce fuel poverty as approximately 20 per cent of heat can be lost through draughts and 80 per cent or so of lighting bills can be saved by fitting LED bulbs.”
Local residents who have benefited by the service so far have expressed their delight at the help they have received.
One of the clients, who lives in Princes Road, Stamford, said: “My home is already much warmer and feels much more cosy. I’m looking forward to checking my electricity bills over the coming months to see how much energy and money I’ve saved.”
The Evergreen Care Trust is delighted to be working in partnership with Sustainable Stamford on this project as it complements the services already provided to the same client group which include advocacy, befriending, chaplaincy, clean team, home support, hospital to home service, lunches and home delivery.
