Lidl submits plans for bigger store in Bourne

Discount chain Lidl wants to increase the size of its proposed Bourne store by about 10 per cent to allow it to stock more products.

The company already has planning permission to build a supermarket with a sales area of 1,286 sq m in the area known as Gateway Park, off the Elsea Park roundabout.

The original proposal got huge support from the Bourne community and was eventually approved by South Kesteven district councillors in October.

But Lidl has now come back with a new application for a bigger store with a sales area of 1,424 sq m. The overall size of the building has been increased from 2,010 sq m to 2,396 sq m.

The company will still be able to build the smaller store even if the new plans are rejected.

According to the latest application, the bigger store will allow Lidl “greater flexibility with merchandising”, and a “brighter store with more space for customers to improve their shopping experience.”

The application adds: “The larger format does not result in any material increase in the range of products displayed for sale, but allows greater volume of the same products to be stocked. This increases the likelihood that customers will be able to find what they need in a single visit, reducing the potential for repeat visits and enabling Lidl to satisfy the needs of its customers.”

The number of parking bays has increased from 100 in the original proposal to 120 in the new plans, including four disabled bays and four parent and toddler bays. Eight bicycle parking stands would also be installed.

The increase in parking spaces is possible because the building itself has been moved in the new plans, from the eastern half of the site to the western. This also allows more room for deliveries and would keep lorries away from homes, according to the application.

The building would also be moved further south to allow for a slight extension of Milestone Road, meaning a hedge to the south would be removed and replaced.

The application refers to the great support for the original plans. About 1,000 people from the Bourne area gave their views at a public consultation at Bourne Corn Exchange, and almost all were in favour.

The application adds: “Consultation with the local community has shown that there is overwhelming support and demand for a new Lidl store and the application site presents an excellent opportunity to meet the community’s demand.”
