Wakes back to winning ways

THE Wakes ended a barren three months without a win on Saturday.

Bourne beat Northampton Spencer 2-0 at the Abbey Lawn to take three points and end their slide down the UCL Premier Divsision table.

Nathan Stainfield broke the deadlock midway through the second half before Dan Schiavi came off the bench to seal the points on his senior debut.

Wakes boss Martyn Lakin said: "It has been a long time since we were able to celebrate a win.

"We haven't had it easy for a few weeks and losing players has a big effect on a small squad at a small club.

"But we still have a cracking spirit and we are all determined to work on improving our league position."

Bourne didn't have it all their own way, with Spencer hitting the bar and having an effort ruled out for offside before the home side got on top.

Lee Orrey squandered a great opportunity late in the opening period but Stainfield made no mistake in the 66th minute when firing home from point-blank range after seeing his initial header saved.

The visitors had been reduced to 10 men by the time 17 year-old Schiavi settled the issue with a cool rebound finish after his first shot had been blocked.

Lakin added: "It is important to bring local lads through and Dan fits the bill.

"He is the son of Bourne Town legend Mark Schiavi and took his goal very well."

Bourne: Drury, Jackson, Stainfield, Smith, Cartwright, G. Staffieri, Pascu, Parr, Kirton, Orrey (Schiavi), Gray. Unused: Brooks, Lawrence.

* Bourne play Rothwell Corinthians at the Abbey Lawn on Tuesday evening. Kick off is at 7.45pm.
