WAKES: New players targeted to stop the rot

NEIL Thorpe is hopeful of having a clutch of new faces at his disposal on Saturday.

Reigning Premier Division champions Stotfold are in town as the Wakes look to end a miserable run of form.

The Bourne player/boss is closing in on signing Blackstones striker Richard Thompson and Sleaford Town's Miles Hunter.

Thorpe said: "I'm hopeful the two signings will be wrapped up in time for them to play against Stotfold.

"We are in urgent need of more firepower."

The Wakes supremo also remained coy on plans to bring Jason Gough and Keith Gray back to the Abbey Lawn.

Assistant boss Jimmy McDonnell is believed to have approached the duo about a return, with Thorpe "optimistic" they would attend training on Thursday night.

Thorpe has also hit out at a "lack of effort" shown by some of his players, as they look to bring a disappointing run of results to an end.

The Wakes have taken just one point from their last six league games, and are winless on all fronts since the opening day of the season.

Thorpe added: "I can accept honest mistakes, but I have been seeing some players show a complete lack of effort and desire.

"I don't expect the fans to tolerate it either, and if it doesn't improve players will be replaced.

"It's important we stop the rot soon, as losing can become a habit."

Stotfold may not be the unstoppable force they were last season, but they have made a steady start to the defence of their crown.

They have won three of their opening six league games, notching 12 goals.

But two defeats in the their last three suggest the Wakes have a chance of causing an upset.

Stotfold completed a double over Bourne last season, winning 1-0 at the Abbey Lawn and 5-0 at home.

Striker Dan Bent and defender Stewart Smith are both in contention to play, providing they came through training.

Bourne will come across a few familiar faces at Yaxley on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Last season's top scorer Liam Palmer, midfielder Simon Barrick and player of the year Matt Holland should all be in the Cuckoos' squad.
