Thrilling finish as Steve claims Harriers honours
BOURNE Town Harriers finally held their Christmas Handicap event on Sunday, January 3 on their usual Bourne Wood circuit.
The race, with a Santa dress code, had been called off the week before for "Elf and Safety" reasons due to the ice and snow, but on the second attempt the course was given the go ahead.
Juniors completed one lap of the 1.9 mile loop with seniors completing two and the runners set off one by one, starting with the slowest runner right through to current fastest Harrier, Matt Grace who started almost 20 minutes after the first junior had set off.
Seven juniors completed the course and all finished within three minutes of each other.
The winner was Ben Jagger, ahead of Amy Gibbons and Jessica Wigley in third. Then came Martin Clarke, Cameron Everest, Ciaron Grafton-Clarke and Oliver Bowling.
Nineteen seniors took part this year, all released within a 15 minute window.
With Matt Grace chasing everyone down it was always going to be a close call and it turned out to be the closest finish since timings were first taken three years ago with everyone home within three and a half minutes of each other, and the lead changing hands with yards to go as Steve Hill beat Rachel Kemp by six seconds.
Peter Swallow was third, followed by Matt Green then Matt Grace, Neill Draycott, Shaun kemp, Elizabeth Dixon, Tony Gilbert, Sara Mickleburgh, Adam Swallow, Nicky Asplin, Paul Beland, Mark Botteley, Ayla Smith, Thomas Honniball, Dave Smith, Louise Swallow and Peter Honniball.
The top three in each race were awarded club prizes, with the winners keeping the club trophies until next year. Lucas Fidler also picked up his spot prize from the last Frostbite race.
The club travel to Lincoln for the Cross Country County Championships on Sunday, followed by the Ramsey Frostbite the week after.
Senior training is back to normal on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Bourne Leisure Centre at 6.30pm and junior training starts again tonight (6pm to 7pm) at Bourne Grammar School.
The Harriers training sessions are varied and cater for all types of ability. Training continues all year round with free expert advice from qualified coaches and new runners of any ability are always welcome to join the club.
