Experience trumps youth

BOURNE A brought themselves to the brink of winning the Peterborough and District Tennis League’s third division with an assured 5-3 defeat of Bourne’s junior side.

An upset looked on the cards as Will Palmer and Richard Worth fought out a 5-4, 5-4 win over Iain Ross and Douglas Main, but the more experienced A team levelled the scores as Edward Whitfield and Lisa Gauci narrowly defeated Matt Hassall and Ed Nation 5-4, 8-1.

Lisa and Edward then earned a 6-3, 4-5 draw against Will and Richard to leave the match hanging in the outcome of the final rubber, but Matt and Ed fell short in a 3-6, 3-6 loss to Iain and Douglas.

The result ends Bourne B’s hopes of winning the division and means Bourne A only need a draw against bottom-of-the-table Baston next weekend to secure promotion.
