Bourne upset the form book

BOURNE Tennis Club’s juniors caused an upset and bolstered their promotion chances with a 5-3 win over league leaders Deeping C.

Despite being the underdogs after losing their previous meeting against Deeping, Bourne started superbly with second pair Jack Mangieri and Will Palmer holding off a spirited fightback from Deeping’s first pair to win 5-4, 5-4.

Matt Hassall and Ed Nation then brought Bourne to the brink of a surprise victory with a comprehensive 7-2, 7-2 win.

Needing one more set to confirm the win, Bourne faltered. Matt and Ed, despite holding a 4-2 lead in the first set, passed up six match points and lost 4-5, 1-8.

Jack and Will then felt the pressure as they lost their first set but a stirring comeback from 3-1 down in the last set to draw 2-7, 6-3 meant that Bourne could celebrate a third strong win in a row.

The result leaves Bourne B third in the table but with games in hand, ensuring that the end of the season will be a tense affair.
