Bourne draw with leaders

BOURNE Tennis Club’s Ladies Vets’ Firsts came close to defeating top side Eastgate for the second time this season but the league leaders avoided defeat by scraping a 4-4, 40-40 draw.

Harriet May and Liz Williams, Bourne’s first pair, got off to a great start by narrowly beating Eastgate’s second pair 7-5, 7-5 in a match that could have gone either way.

The scores were level at the halfway point, however, after Lisa Gauci and Caroline Stimson were turned over 4-6, 2-6 by Eastgate’s proficient first pair.

With the match delicately poised, Lisa and Caroline brought Bourne to the brink of an upset with a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 win that left Bourne in need of just one more set for outright victory.

But Eastgate’s first pair proved too strong for Harriet and Liz, who suffered an unlucky 4-6, 4-6 loss.

The day’s extraordinary events continued when the game count turned out to be level at 40-40, meaning that the points were shared in a rare draw that keeps Bourne in third place in Division One.
