Snow wreaks fixtures havoc

BOURNE'S Christmas weekend derbies against Sleaford Town at the Abbey Lawn on Boxing Day and at Deeping Rangers on Monday look likely to be cancelled due to the weather.

The Wakes' game with table-toppers St Neots was called off on Saturday because of the snow and freezing temperatures, and boss Martyn Lakin, pictured, fears that the next two games could go the same way.

"I would think it's unlikely that either game will go ahead," he said. "It's not just about the state of the pitch but a case of people travelling to the matches as well.

"It would have been good to get a home game on Boxing Day - it brings a bit of money to the club."

The break until the following fixture, St Ives on January 2nd, gives Lakin's squad time to regroup and time to reflect on the progress made so far this season.

With seven victories and nine defeats from the first 19 of the season's UCL Premier Division fixtures under their belt, the Wakes have won more points from fewer games than at this stage last season.

The early stages of the season were overshadowed by an outstanding FA cup run during which Bourne claimed the scalps of Goole Town and Boston Town before bowing out at Worcester City.

"We have exceeded expectations," said Lakin, whose side has seen a dip in form since going down 5-1 at home to Blackstones.

He said: "There are two or three mini-leagues within the division and we are at the bottom of the middle one.

"Now we need to make sure we don't slip into that bottom tier.

"The FA Cup run was a bonus. We were a bit of a surprise package at the start of the season but teams know more about us now."

The average age is about 21 or 22 which could work against us later in the season when experience can be vital."

But while Lakin is rebuilding Bourne Town on the pitch, off-pitch difficulties remain.

Lakin said: "We wanted to get things on an even keel and things have stabilised on the pitch but we have had committee members leave and we do need volunteers."

A couple of long-standing supporters stepped in to help with the tea bar during the last home game and the club has issued a call for volunteers to help with setting up the nets and running the bar.

Free drinks and free entry to home games is on offer for anybody who can step in to help the club on matchdays.

l Bourne Town Reserves' game against Northampton Sileby Rangers was also cancelled on Saturday.

The Wakes Reserves next fixture is away at Stewarts & Lloyds Corby on January 2nd.
