Victory would boost Bourne’s top-half aims
Victory against Thorney tomorrow would set up Bourne RFC with a good chance of finishing in the top half of the table this season.
Bourne joined the RFC Midlands 4 East (South) this season and have their sights set on sixth spot after a comfortable win against bottom side Stamford College Old Boys on Saturday.
Skipper Adam Binns scored two tries with Jason Rushton, Jack Berry and Matt Ross also scoring to secure Bourne a valuable bonus point. Binns kicked the remaining points on an afternoon when the wind meant conversions were at a premium.
“We played really well,” said Binns, whose side thought they had scored another try only for it to be ruled out by the match officials as they ran up a 15-7 half-time lead.
“Jason Rushton ran a superb line for his first try this season,” added Binns. “He deserved that. He has played very well. And Jack Berry’s was a contender for try of the season.”
Bourne had a penalty on the edge of their 22 but instead of kicking for a goal, Binns kicked cross-field to Berry, landing the ball perfectly in his teammates arms for him to crash through two tackles and over the line.
“It will be a big game this weekend,” said the Bourne skipper. “We could finish sixth if we win; if we lose it will be an uphill struggle.”
Tomorrow’s match at Milking Nook Drove starts at 2.15pm.
