Stamford Rugby Vets extended their winning streak in the Fengate Cup, an antique gin bottle, annually contested at Christmas against Peterborough Juggers, to 10 years with a comprehensive 48-5 victory on Saturday.
Peterborough’s full back opened the scoring but after some fine team handling centre Justin Howells sidestepped his opposite number to level the score.
Brian Lonslow was next to cross in the corner to edge the lead at halftime.
With the wind at their backs in the second half Stamford attacked and it was not long before skipper Steve Roberts scored a five pointer.
Stamford earned a penalty inside Peterborough’s half and quick thinking number eight Mark Robson took a quick tap penalty and bulldozed his way through the hapless defence to score a fantastic solo try.
An audacious switch move between centres Pip Warters and Howells gave space to full back Stewart Andrews to cantor over the line. Roberts added an outrageous conversion. The final try was awarded added by Pete Bradley, who crashed over from 10 yards, breaking three tackles and dragging two defenders.
