Stamford Colts put in their best performance of the season so far to overcome local rivals Spalding, turning a 30 – 5 away loss last year into a 22 – 10 home victory.

With the forwards, winning quality ball at the breakdown and set piece, allowing the Stamford’s backs a superb platform to attack the Spalding defence.

Spalding went ahead with a try but the Stamford forwards responded, making the hard yards and strong running from the backs repeatedly broke the gain line.

The breakthrough for Stamford was when Oliver Winspear cleared up a loose pass and drove over for the equaliser. Oliver Sherwin put the home side ahead shortly before half time with his first try for Stamford.

In the second half Dean Elmore opened the try scoring, converted by Luke Ford with a superb kick in tricky conditions. But Spalding added another to make things interesting.

Winspear put the game beyond doubt he cut inside and ran a lovely line to notch up the final score.
