Oakham Second XV had a tough finish to their league campaign in the LRU Division Two with the visit of title challengers Leicester Medics.
The rugby team of the students from Leicester University Medical College, who are second in the league, put on an impressive display to run out 47-10 winners at the new Showground.
Oakham started well and pressed the Medics, but lost possession and allowed the agile and speedy Medics to break away and score an early try.
This turned out to be the pattern of the match with the Oakham team doing well until the Medics could get the ball out wide and move it around them.
Medics managed to add two more tries to go 21 points up in quick time and to and further injury the Leicester side added two further converted tries before the break.
In the second half Oakham became better organized and kept the ball closer to the forwards which made better use of their heavier pack.
Oakham won the ball from lineouts and some strikes against the head in the scrums gave the Oaks Seconds good ball to work with.
Pressure towards the Medics’ line enabled fly half Sam James to break through and score Oakham’s first try.
Further Oakham lineout possession, by Joe Hudson, on the Medics’ 22 line set-up an Oakham rolling maul, which ended with Hudson grounding the ball for Oakham’s second try of the afternoon.
The match score does not reflect a good competitive game as Oakham had most of the territory and possession, but were not able to stop the Medics making quick decisive scoring breaks. Oakham Second XV end the league season mid table, and hope to be able to challenge higher next season.
