Two Oakham School pupils have been selected for the Midlands Under-16s Rugby Squad.
Jake Charters and Matt Riddington, who are both studying for their GCSEs, have been put through their paces to win their place in the squad.
They first represented the county in trial games and then were invited to a training weekend, where a team of selectors chose the final squad.
Jake and Matt are both involved with the Leicester Tigers, with Jake playing prop for the club’s Under-16 squad and Matt having played in the 1st XV at fly half.
Oakham School’s director of rugby Ian Smith said: “Oakham has a national reputation for rugby, not only at a team level, but also through the continuing success of individual students who go on to win professional playing contracts and to represent their country.”
Smith, who is a former Leicester Tigers captain and coach, said: “All our players benefit from regular coaching from experienced staff, as well as additional training sessions from legendary players such as Graham Rowntree, George Chuter and Austin Healey.
“Those players with promise are helped to progress onto a representative pathway.
“It’s great that Jake and Matt’s talents have been identified and hopefully they will follow in the footsteps of other Oakhamians, including British and Irish Lions flanker Tom Croft, England international and Saracens full back Alex Goode, former England captain Lewis Moody, Leicester Tigers stalwart Matt Smith and emerging Harlequins star Charlie Walker.”
