Local rivals Stamford and Oakham fought out a very close Colts contest on Sunday.

Stamford made the worst possible start by losing possession from the kick-off and Oakham scored under the posts to go 7-0 down with less than a minute played .

The game then continued with both sides having attacking chances but unable to convert.

Oakham scored again on 25 minutes with some excellent interplay in their backs and running in a try from their own half. The conversion made the score 14-0.

Stamford then had a prolonged period of pressure which finally led to a try just before half time. Elliott Moss picked up the ball from the back of a ruck and powered over to score. This gave a half time score of 14-5.

Stamford scored again shortly after the break. Ollie Winspear broke clear and ran half the length of the field – great support play by Mark Sclanders led to the ball being quickly recycled and Dean Elmore scored in the corner to take the score to 14-10.

Over the next 15 minutes, Oakham ran in two more excellent tries to take the score to 31-10 with 10 minutes left to play.

Stamford responded again by scoring through Dean Elmore. The score was converted by Rob Elmore.

Then a superb individual try by Ollie Winspear took the score to 31-22 with 5 minutes left to play.

There was still time for Stamford to score one more, this time through Rob Elmore, but time finally ran out in the enthralling game and the match finished 31-27 to a deserving Oakham side.
