Bourne kick their way to victory as tactics pay off

A switch of tactics had the desired effect as Bourne RFC returned to winning ways against Westwood on Saturday.

After the 102 point reverse against Brackley a week earlier, it was important for Bourne to get back on track quickly and a 22-19 victory against their mid-table rivals was just the tonic.

Bourne had clearly learnt from the trouncing handed out by the division leaders and chose their moments to kick with perfection.

Captain Adam Binns, who kicked five penalties and a conversion, said: “It was a really, really good result from a tight game.

“It was an excellent team effort and tactically we played it well. We realised that we needed to start kicking points and kicked at the right times.

“I think this was our best performance of the season tactically.”

The match at Westwood was nip and tuck all the way, with four penalties handing Bourne a slender 12-11 lead at half-time.

Soon after half-time, Bourne extended their lead with a superb team try, touched down by Ed Hilliam-Cooke at the end of a move that involved every Bourne player.

Westwood reduced the arrears late on but Bourne held out for their fifth victory of the season.

After an impressive first few months in the Midlands 4 East (South) division, sixth spot remains Bourne’s target in their first season since returning to the RFU league structure.

Binns added: “We had a lot of key players missing for the Brackley game and we knew we hadn’t become a poor side overnight.

“People wrote us off early on and that fuelled our fire. We are way ahead of where we expected to be.”

Bourne’s next game is at home to the team one place above them, Thorney, on January 26.

Bourne: Neil Wood (Lee Wilcox), Xanti Xipu, Jake Appleby, Tom Douglas (James Paterson), Anthony Hilliam-Cooke, John Hume, Ed Hilliam-Cooke, Jason Rushton, Drew Castle, Tom Dixon, Matt Ross, Ewan Jones, Andrew Dixon (Jack Berry), Dan Bonham, Adam Binns.
