THE engineering skills of students from the University of Hertfordshire were put to the test at a prestigious racing event.

Competing against other teams from around the globe, Herts bagged an impressive top-three place at Formula Student 2011.

The annual event was held at Britain’s world famous Silverstone race track, where teams were challenged to build, design and race a Formula One-style racing car.

And after a year of hard work, Herts managed to bag third place in the worldwide competition.

The team upped their game to beat their result in the 2010 competition by two places.

The university’s impressive entry was only topped by German outfits Stuttgart and Munich.

Not only did that place Herts above teams from the USA and India, but it also secured their position as the UK’s best formula student team.

Proud team leader Clare Cletheroe said: “It was a major surprise to come third.

“We did really well on the final day thanks to a massive team effort.”

Over 100 vehicles were judged on their speed, acceleration, endurance and handling.

But that wasn’t all the teams had to consider as they were also judged on their design, costing and business presentation skills.

Jon Hilton, a Formula Student chairman and former F-1 engineer, spoke fondly of all the teams that participated.

“Every student team that made it to Silverstone this weekend has achieved an enormous amount,” he said.
