Champions are favourites to retain title

Last year’s Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League champions, Eastfield A, are now clear favourites to retain their crown after a series of mixed results from rivals MTTG.
MTTG picked up two wins against Uffington CC A and Braunston A but their perfect season was shattered by two defeats at the bats of Eastfield MTTG and Eastfield A.
Chris Weston’s full-house and braces from Andy Goodacre and Dave Needham ensured a convincing 8-2 success against Uffington, for whom Greg Baxter continued his promising season with two wins for the cricketers. Chris and Andy both earned three wins in their team’s 7-3 victory over Braunston.
But Eastfield MTTG’s Adam Jepson stepped up to inflict damage on MTTG’s ambitions with a full-house. Miroslav Vala chipped in with two points and, with Steve Williams, secured the decisive doubles point.
Eastfield A then confirmed their dominance with an 8-2 victory over their close rivals. Shaun Murray and Daniel Fielding were both unbeaten on the night.
Eastfield C return to the top of Division 2 following an 8-2 win at Nomads.
JJ Otahal and Martin Paluga played strongly to boast unbeaten evenings. However, Nomads returned to winning ways against Uffington CC B, and, with Nick McDowall and Nick Goodman both unbeaten, they move up to third.

In the final match of the week, Tallington A travelled to Bourne E and won 9-1.
Paul Ramm and Richard Allen enjoyed unblemished evenings while Kevin Toomey won twice. John Hart secured the consolation point for Bourne.
Junior players braved the snow and took part in league and handicap tournaments at Stamford
School’s Sports Centre.
Each team played the others in a round robin format, and it was the pairing of Matthew Smith and Tom Fowler who enjoyed victory with two wins and a draw. The runner’s-up of the league were Marcus Baker and Ollie Dore with two wins.
After the leagues, a handicap competition was organised, with handicaps being decided by the individuals’ earlier performances and results. The final was won by a delighted Jonny Winfrey, who defeated Ollie Dore 31-30.
