Motorsport: Drivers are bang in form to wow massive crowd
BOURNE drivers were in fantastic form at the 1,500cc Bangers race at King's Lynn at the weekend.
Sensational displays from several young drivers wowed one of the biggest crowds of the season and Bourne's David Gibson led the Mad Hatters team from the front with a display which earned him two entertainer awards.
The first heat started off badly for Roland Bullock (Bourne) who was followed in hard by Boston's Lyndon Stark.
Gibson started well homing in on another car with a thunderous shot in the early stages but it was Sam Baines who was the best local finisher, taking eighth.
In the second heat Baines was involved in the action early on, homing in on a number of cars.
By the third lap another Bourne driver, Jonny Atkins had moved up to second and on the penultimate lap forced the leader wide to enter the last lap in the lead.
Entering the final bend Sean Haller of Fakenham made a desperate attempt to retake the lead and made contact with Atkins half spinning him. As both drivers headed towards the fence Ely's Danielle Heweitt came up the inside and took the chequered flag with Atkins recovering well for second and Haller third.
The final started with Gibson once again going out to entertain, taking out Fakenham's Alan Jackson as soon as the green flag went down.
Meanwhile Atkins swept into an early lead from Haller as a rerun of the second heat looked on the cards. But this time Atkins made no mistake and extended his lead as the race went on to take a fantastic first place.
Sam Baines came home in third meaning two of Bourne's youthful Mad Hatter racers were on the podium. As well as going all out to entertain the crowd, Gibson also managed to get home in eighth place.
Final winner Atkins started off the Destruction Derby by coming in with a big shot through the back wheel of Boston driver Lloyd Stark, with Gibson and Baines both coming in with follow up shots. Later on in the Derby, Gibson got a head on shot on Lloyd's brother Lyndon.
Gibson survived to the final pairing, a straight head-on challenge between the Bourne star and George Adams from Kings Lynn with the win being shared and David picking up his second entertainer award for an epic display.
Saturday's meeting was also a round of qualifying for the national championship which takes place in December and Baines has done no harm to his chances of qualifying for the big race.
He now sits in eighth on the leaderboard with Gibson close behind in 14th. The top 18 drivers at the end of the series automatically qualify for the big race.
The next meeting at the Norfolk Arena will be on Saturday, August 21 at 6.30pm with racing coming from the Stock Cars National Championship and the Lady Bangers on the bill.
