Bourne swimmer Alex Wray has a chance to be in Rio in the summer after earning a place at the Great Britain Olympic Trials.
The 17-year-old Bourne Grammar School pupil is the star performer of a vintage crop of youngsters at Deepings Swimming Club. Wray has repeatedly represented the club at Counties, Midlands, and Nationals.
Wray has consistently picked up medals, county and club records and titles along the way. At the Lincolnshire County Championships earlier in the year he won all the men’s freestyle events he entered, breaking the 50m Freestyle county championship record which was held previously by Simon Howitt.
This year he qualified for the British Summer Championships, where he won bronze in the 100 Freestyle, and has also qualified for the Olympic Trials in 2016.
The club once again excelled at the Midland District Short Course Swimming Championships at the weekend as they continue to compete with the best in the area. New swimmers have emerged on to the scene at the club and established squad swimmers have pushed themselves on to the next level by breaking both club and county records.
Representing the club at the Midland District Championships were: Tom Adams (13), Thomas Neal (15), Bailie Harrison (15), Isabel Spinley(15), Bethany Wilde (16), Zoe Fisher (17) and Alex Wray (17yrs).
Wray added to his trophy collection when he was crowned Men’s 50m Freestyle Midland District Champion in a time of 22.81 seconds.
The Girl’s 50m Butterfly club record continues to be broken by either Isabel Spinley or Bailie Harrison. The record before last weekend belonged to Spinley, and she broke it during her 100m event; but only held it for a short while as Harrison came out in the individual 50m Butterfly event and smashed it by producing a swim that took her under 30 seconds for the very first time, with a time of 29.90.
Both Wray and Spinley qualified for this year’s British National Short Course Championships to be held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield in December thanks to their performances.
Tom Neal broke the club 200m Backstroke record with a time of 2:15.52 at the Midland District Championships.
