Deeping St James AC held a well attended sweepstake on their Horseshoe Lake at Wansford on Sunday, but the recent drop in temperatures have made the fish shoal up in certain areas and the peninsular was the place to draw.
Leading the field with his first win with the club was Dave Thorpe on Peg 19. Casting towards the middle of the lake on the method feeder, he took 40lb of carp on sweetcorn and meat plus some silver fish which included a fine bream of 7lb to weigh 47lb 13oz.
In second place from peg 17 was Brian Ogden who caught on similar tactics and bait, but fished tight to the far bank to take 33lb 14oz of carp.
In third place was Mike Atherton on peg 15 who weighed 26lb 4oz. Section winners were Jason Wilmer, Mike Smith, David Norville and Alan Jopling.
This month Deeping St James AC held their last cup match of the river season on their stretch of the River Nene at Wansford which is always the Non Cup Winners Cup.
With the river still pushing through hard and carrying a lot of colour, many found the going hard, but with the glorious spring weather it could never be a bad day to be on the river bank.
It was good to see the cup won not by default, but by an outright win with the first two anglers both eligible.
It was Deeping angler Ron Needham who won the day with 5lb 5oz from peg 21 which included a superb chub of 4lb 3oz which he took on a float fished worm tipped with a maggot.
Mel Saggers, who has been having a good run of catches recently, was once again pushed in to second place after working hard throughout the match to take mainly roach for 4lb 15½oz from peg 18.
In third place was Hugh Mannall on peg 12 whose catch of 4lb 11.5oz included a bream of 2lb. Section winners were Des Dalton, Alan Jopling and Ray Torrington.
