Rutland County’s Imogen Huxley had a tough choice to make – defend her title as Lady Club Champion for a possible ‘three in a row’ or contest the County U18s Championship in this, her year of county captaincy.
She opted for the Leicestershire and Rutland County event at Kibworth Golf Club and it proved to be the right choice as she ran away with the event on 160, leaving her nearest rival, Forest Hill’s Ellie York, trailing in her wake - fully five shots behind.
l In the run up to the English Amateur Open at Saunton Golf Club, club champion Mike Pressick won the July Midweek Medal on 70-1-69, edging an unlucky Roger Overton whose 78-9-69 shows another golfer enjoying improving form.
Pete Siciliano recorded 81-10-71 for third on countback ahead of Tony Reilly and an inconsistent James Grant who had an albatross on the par five 8th hole - skilfully guiding his second shot into the hole from 200 yards out.
A further bonus for Grant was that he swept the 2’s comp with no other recorded birdies on the par threes – let alone the par fives.
l It was a mixed bag for the teams this week – the A team had an important home 4½ to 3½ win over Rutland Water to improve chances of avoiding relegation in the Scratch League.
Helping the cause mightily with 2½ points were the Paylor boys – Neil winning 2 &1, Jordan winning 3 & 2, Josh halving. Kev Moxham lost 3 & 2, Pete Siciliano lost 3 & 2, Chris Palmer lost 1 down, Deggie Palmer won 1 up, James Grant won 2 up.
Jenny Cobb’s Ladies suffered a comprehensive 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Greetham Valley.
Despite impressive wins for Kev Moxham and Deggie Palmer, and Pete Siciliano and Packa Risi, the B team also suffered a home defeat by 3½ to 2½.
l Lady Captain’s Day was a pleasant affair – a tight contest followed by a meal and presentation in the clubhouse - organised by Jenny Cobb to celebrate her second year of captaincy.
Meg Tasker followed her Championship win with 40 points to edge Karen Collins and Ann Shuttleworth on 39. Heather Knapp, Suzanne Huxley, Michelle Powell and Mandy Collins were nearest the pins and the day raised £200 for Jenny’s charity – The Alzheimer’s Society.
l Neil Paylor advanced into the last eight of the Singles KO, easing Deggie Palmer out by 1-up and now faces John Peyser. Martyn Gatehouse and Carl Frith beat Gerry Barry and Andy Pringle by 3 & 2 in the Doubles.
l The Seniors lost 6-2 to Greetham Valley Seniors.
l A large field for the Seniors July Medal enjoyed a course in glorious condition which refuses to yield low scores. Ray Taylor again mastered the conditions to win Division 1 on net 69, a shot clear of Alan Bainbridge, both getting one shot handicap reductions. Kenny Windsor was third with 72.
l Division 2 was a far tighter affair as only countback could separate John Downey, Ron Jenkins and the winner, Mike Gamble on net 73. Dave Wilson was nearest the line, Keith Burnett nearest the Pin.
l In the 2 from 3 Comp, Pete Stokes, Alan Garner and Kenny Windsor amassed 90 points to win ahead of Frank Copsey, Terry Loomes and Alan Weedon on 81.
l Dave Wilson beat John Killin 3 & 2 in the Singles KO. Steve Markham and Phil Claypole beat Dick Wray and Mike Frankish 2 & 1 in the Doubles.
