Club president Ken Merridan has won the seniors winter league at Rutland Water Golf Club for the first time.
During the series Ken recorded two scores of 43 points and finished off a fantastic campaign with a solid 36 to win by a comfortable margin from Paul Kirk in second and Paul Friend in third.
Merridan, who has been a member of the club since its origin, said: “I just play to enjoy the game and didn’t take much notice of the scores through the winter. Maybe that’s the secret, but it’s lovely to win.”
Merridan has now been cut from 21 to his lowest ever handicap of 19 and celebrates his 80th birthday next year.
The seniors received a warm welcome from hosts Nene Park on a cold morning last week for their first match of the year.
It was Tony Wright’s first match in charge as the new captain and he led from the front by recording a 6 & 5 victory with partner Bob Sachs.
Despite having to endure a hailstorm on the back nine, the team managed to edge out the hosts in a tight contest by 3 ½ points to 2 ½ with Jim Graham and Tim Beck securing the crucial half point.
Other notable victories came from Barry Read and Paul Kirk who won 6 & 5 and Tony Purkis and Dave Mee who won 3 & 1.
Afterwards, captain Wright thanked the hosts for a very enjoyable day and commented that it had been a dream start to his captaincy at the club.
