So it’s a New Year and coming up to a personal anniversary. Next week will mark one year since I took over covering sport for The Local.

With that in mind I thought it was time for something new and each week I will write a column taking a look at the wider world of sport, about the events and issues which have got us in the sporting community on the edge of our seats and more often than not talking and arguing about it in the bar.

I spend all my time writing about others but first of all here is a little about me. Rather predictably I love sport and I am lucky enough to be doing the job of my dreams.

Having never played sport until I got to secondary school I took to it like a drug. Within the space of a year I was captain of the rugby team, both at the local club and school, as well as playing basketball, football, cricket and running.

If my school back in deepest darkest Devon had a sports team I was in it.

I was lucky enough to be a part of a couple of great teams, winning numerous county cups, league honours and more in both rugby and football.

I had the honour of captaining my county at age group rugby but watched my rivals continue to grow into some of the monstrously large players in the Aviva Premiership now.

As you get older it gets harder to be as active, both physically and with time pressures. I played First XV rugby through university before turning my attention to covering the game as a journalist which has seen my follow the Leicester Tigers around the country. Now my sporting activities are restricted to the six-a-side football pitch on a Wednesday night, the odd charity rugby game and on one crazy occasion last year a marathon.

The Bourne area is a remarkable hot bed of cycling talent with the likes of Maddie Gammons and Ryan Hutchinson leading the national rankings and their extraordinary exploits have inspired me.

This time of year is a time for resolutions and mine is to get back on my bike more often and take on John O’Groats to Lands’ End in the summer. What’s your sporting goals?
