Two Stamford boxers put in sensational big hitting performances to win away in Derbyshire at the weekend.

Fighters from Stamford ABC made the trip to compete in the Alfreton ABC open boxing tournament, with outstanding performances from both boys.

Stamford ABC 19-year-old Naseem Benjamaa, from Wittering, boxing in the 62kg category faced a tough and experienced opponent Konrad Nowicki from the X BOX B.C

Nowicki forced the early pace throwing hard hitting shots to both head and body, but Naz as he’s known at the club patiently waited for the right moment to strike, countering his opponents attacks with fast combinations to gradually ease his way into the contest.

Growing in confidence Benjamaa began to take the fight to Nowicki, regularly catching the hard hitting polish fighter with sharp right hand shots which eventually saw Nowicki being floored by a crushing right hook.

When he regained his footing he was still a little unstable on his feet and the referee stopped the contest on a technical knockout in favour of the jubilant Stamford boxer.

Earlier in the competition fellow Stamford ABC club teammate 15-year-old Toby Herbert, competing at the 65kg division, fought against stocky and hard hitting Joe Harvey from the Bolsover B.C

After a below par performance in Herbert’s last contest he was out to put on a positive performance for his coaches, and indeed he did.

Harvey came out of his corner in the first round very aggressive taking the fight to Herbert, who after taking a couple of early shots started to move around the ring firing long lefts and right hooks to keep his opponent defending rather than attacking.

Herbert grew in confidence and let fly with flurries of left hand counters which got Harvey regularly on the back foot.

Eventually the Stamford teenager’s pressure paid dividends with Harvey being floored by a snappy right hook from Herbert.

Harvey quickly recovered to be faced with a barrage of shots from Herbert who fired in a strong left hand haymaker which saw Harvey taking a standing eight count to help him recover.

Herbert saw the fight out to win on a unanimous point’s verdict.

Stamford ABC head coach Rick Green said: “This was a good day for Stamford Boxing Club.

“It shows that Toby and Naz and the rest of the boxers in the club are taking on board the training and fitness information provided by my young team of eager and committed coaches.”
