There was an intriguing local battle taking place at the Stamford leg of the Peterborough 5k race series last night (July 16) as the top runner from Bourne Town Harriers and Stamford Striders fought it out for tenth and 11th place.

The duel was eventually won by Bourne Town Harrier’s Jonathan Palmer who was awarded 10th place ahead of Striders’ Mark Popple despite the two runners finishing on the same time of 17:30.

John Pike of Newham and Essex Beagles won the Stamford leg of the five race series in an impressive 16:09. Second was Nene Valley Harriers’ Michael Moore in 16:33, followed by Peterborough AC’s Stuart Haw in 16:39 for third place on a hot and humid night.

Quickest female runner on the night was Nene Valley Harriers Grace Mullins in 18:40.

Much further down the two lap track around the streets of Stamford was Rutland and Stamford Mercury sports editor John Evely who came in 82nd in 21:18.

The race series title had been wrapped up before the Stamford leg after Stamford-based runner Aaron Scott won the first three events.
