Oakham’s super vets got the season rolling with a strong 7-1 win over Roundhill at The Vale.

Non-playing captain Gordon Smith was very pleased with his team’s showing to get their season under way.

The league is played early before the main competitions begin, but it showed how the Oakham men have kept sharp over the winter.

The team was strengthened by new member Peter Farrar who partnered Gordon Reekie for the first time. The pair had few difficulties as they won 6-1, 6-1 against the visitors’ 2nds then had to produce stronger drives to keep the visitors’ 1sts at bay, before winning 6-2, 6-4.

Dry and Stewart pulled off a very tight tiebreak against the 1sts but had to give way in the second set. They had an easier match against the seconds who were forced to make errors.

Summer season League matches begin early in May.

April will see Tuesday (men) and Wednesday(ladies) evenings devoted to team practices at the club.

All interested in playing league tennis will be warmly welcomed.
