Fourteen-year-old Oakham School pupil Ben Southern helped an Oakham Town cricket XI beat his school’s 2nd XI in a match on Bank Holiday Monday.
The school won the toss and chose to bat, only to see their captain dismissed first ball by an absolute beauty from Southern.
The Oakham School innings never really recovered and only their number two batsman kept the innings going with a half century.
The rest of the Oakham School batting struggled to cope with the sharp turn of Carel Fourie’s offspin and the innings ended when Southern returned to dismiss the last man, leaving the school side on 135 all out in the 31st over.
Town lost a couple of early wickets in reply but a century partnership between Vivek Naker (86 not out) and new boy Will Bell (37 not out) saw them to 136-2 in little more than 20 overs to win by eight wickets.
