Oakham boxer Paul Butlin won the vacant Midlands Area Heavyweight title in controversial style on Saturday when his opponent Shane McPhilbin was disqualified.

Nottingham based fighter McPhilbin was disqualified in the fourth round of the top-of-the-bill clash at the North Kesteven Centre in North Hykeham for multiple acts of foul play.

Referee Shaun Messer deducted McPhilbin one point in the second round for illegally hitting the back of Butlin’s head and he then disqualified him after 2:10 of the fourth round for hitting on the break.

Winning the Midlands belt completes some unfinished business for 38-year-old Butlin who lost his previous title fight narrowly on points to Lee Swaby in 2009.
