New seniors captain Tony Wright has swung into his role in fine style at Rutland Water Golf Club by taking part in the Captain’s Tee Off.

Left-handed Wright said he was just pleased to get the ball off the tee as some 50 senior members watched on.

Wright thanked David Lloyd Williams for all his hard work over the past year.

He said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be seniors captain at such a great golf club and I am excited and looking forward to the challenge of heading up what is now a thriving section.”

Mike Rook takes over as the new vice captain.

In the winter leagues it was a close affair in the men’s competition as three of
the club’s low handicapped golfers all tied on 41 points with Chris Pollitt edging out Mike Donaldson and big-hitting Robbie Pengelly on countback.

In the overall standings, Graham Ball leads the way, but with only two points separating the first five players, it is still all to play for in the final three rounds.

The ladies January round was equally as tight with Jill McTaggart winning by only a point from Sue Kerr and Liz Pengelly.

Sharon Baxter still holds a commanding 10 point lead at the top of the table.

Paul Kirk has surged up the Seniors standings with a fantastic 42 points to win the latest round by a staggering six points from Paul Friend and Derek Needham.

Paul now lies second in the table, three points behind the ever-consistent Ken Merridan with Tony Wright in third.
