Rutland County’s Senior Open Winter Series attracted 72 golf-starved players from across the region, many of whom had not been able to play on their own courses for several weeks due to flooding and unplayable conditions.

Having travelled from Yorkshire to play in the 4th stage of the five-part series, Mike Harris shot 41 points to win with his playing partner Pete Tunningley second on 40 points.

John Campbell was third on countback with 39 points, ahead of Terry Hector and Roy Mcgarry.

The final round is on Monday, March 3 – all seniors are welcome to play, call 01780 460330 for more information.

l Craig Allan shot an accomplished 78-10-68 to win the February Medal, albeit on countback ahead of the ever-present Deggie Palmer whose gross 73 was best of the day.

Eric Cooper shot 76-8-68 for third place, also on countback. Four of the top six were single figure handicappers which shows that the better players can still figure in the winter competitions despite forward tees and easier playing conditions. Jim Wilson had a good day, shooting 86-15-71 with birdies on two par-threes for a double share of the Two’s Fund.

l Partnering Darren Child, Stamford Rugby legend Dave Waddell had a day to savour, winning the Winter Betterball with 39 points, just ahead of wily Pete Siciliano and the in-form Craig Allan on countback.

The ferocious gale-force winds suited the winning pair who revelled in conditions that saw stationary balls being blown off greens.

l During 2013, Rutland County’s Lady Captain Mandy Collins raised £770.50 for the British Heart Foundation.

Mandy thanked the Ladies Section and all RCGC Members who contributed so generously, and recently presented the cheque to Helena Mair from the British Heart Foundation at the club. On behalf of the foundation, Helena thanked the Ladies and the Club.

l In the Senior Section, the Seniors 2 from 3 roll-up was won with a score of 82 points by Peter Stokes, Kenny Windsor and Gordon Young.

l Week 12 of the Winter Stableford was won by Nick Nicolle with Stewart Picton second and Alan Shuttleworth third.
