Rutland Water Golf Club member Gary Fretwell has managed to achieve a lifelong ambition by claiming his first hole-in-one.
Playing an unscheduled 9 holes in the glorious sunshine on Sunday morning, 13 handicapper Gary showed good early form as he started with three pars in a row before reaching the par 3 4th.
Fretwell selected an 8 iron and struck a crisp shot with a touch of draw through the headwind and right on line with the flag.
Due to the uphill nature of the hole, Gary and fellow playing partners Graeme McNaughton and David Dalglish were not sure exactly were the ball had finished and were initially checking over the back of the green before eventually looking in the hole where to everyone’s amazement there it was sitting.
Fretwell said: “I have been close lots of times over the years and delighted to finally have one drop in.
“The icing on the cake was to walk off the course level par (gross), something else I have never done. Collect your drinks at the bar.”
Club president Ken Merridan has extended his lead at the top of the Senior Winter league standings with a magnificent score of 42 points on Monday.
Afterwards Ken, who had a 30 year career as head groundsman for Arsenal’s training pitches at The University College, London, said: “I was just happy to be playing after the weather we’ve had and credit to the greenkeepers who have kept the course in such fantastic condition.”
Vice captain Mike Rook was second with 39 and Bob Kerr third with 38.
A full house turned out for the first ever race night at the golf club to raise funds towards a defibrillator.
After delaying the start awaiting the arrival of his whip, member Graham Hollick kept everyone entertained with his commentary and it was a real team effort as top local chef Gemma Wood put on some food and golf club owners Steve and Tracy Makey took the bets.
The auction for horses in the last race helped to raise £900 towards the defibrillator and was won by an Uppingham led team headed by John Tilley, former jockey John Pearson and Head Professional John Pengelly.
A charity quiz night will be held on March 21 to raise further funds.
