Week three of the Winter league was played last weekend at Rutland Water Golf Club.

With the forecast ominous and predicting 40 mph winds for the Sunday, the majority of the field decided to play on the Saturday. Their decision was justified. Gretton resident Gary Tait, who had been lacking a bit of confidence in recent weeks, seemed like a new man and began very quickly. Playing off his 14 handicap, he set the front nine alight with five pars, two of which were unfortunate not to be birdies.

Gary carried on his tight, solid play well into the back nine and six more pars saw Gary around in five under his handicap for a winning total of 41 points.

In a close second was Richard Payne, also with a great score of 40 points, one clear of Vinny Keefe in third on 39 points.

The highlight of the weekend however, was Vinny’s hole-in-one on the tough par three 12th.

Standing on the 130 yard hole with the wind howling hard into his face, Vinny pulled out a seven iron from his bag. He placed the ball towards the back of his stance and had a couple of looks at the flag before making his swing. With water to carry, he knew he had to strike it perfectly and he did just that. The ball set off low before climbing gradually into the wind. With a small amount of right to left movement towards the hole, Vinny was now getting excited at the possibility of the ball going close to the pin. The ball landed two feet beyond the pin and with a hint of backspin, worked its way towards the hole before disappearing. It was high fives all around on the tee as Vinny celebrated.

Vinny said: “As soon as I hit the ball I knew it was in. That’s how good my swing feels at the moment.”
