Stamford School 1st team won twice this week, booking their place in the semi-final of the national U18 Hockey Association Plate competition with a win 3-2 victory Chigwell School in Essex

Stamford made the midweek journey across to Bedford, determined to keep their high win percentage up. However, this determination was dealt head on by a resolute and physical Bedford side, that in the opening encounters were up for the challenge.

Against the run of play, Stamford earned themselves a short corner which in-form defender and drag flicker James Dodworth slotted home.

A relieved Stamford side settled into the game more and made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, again from set-piece specialist Dodworth.

Stamford looked reinvigorated after half-time, and quickly made their pressure tell with two early goals by the fleet-footed Tom MacDonald.

Bedford grabbed a couple of consolation goals to finish 4-2.

In their cup quarter-final on Saturday Stamford started the better of the two teams and were rewarded a string of short corners.

Centre-back James Dodworth made no mistake with his first flick, low into the right corner, to put the visitors 1-0 up. Chigwell gradually began to gain a stronger foothold in the game and on 18 minutes equalise through their junior England international, Connor Caplan. Caplan converted shortly afterwards from Chigwell’s second short corner.

Stamford hung on and Dan Sproul was in inspired form producing a string of saves to keep his side in the match.

In the last 10 minutes of the game Joe Chedd expertly intercepted a Chigwell defender around the back and broke towards the Chigwell goal. Having been impeded, a short corner was deservedly given. Up stepped the cool-headed Dodworth to square the game up at 2-2.

With 4 minutes left on the clock Davies broke free on the left hand side of the Chigwell 25 and a reserve-stick cross found forward Tom MacDonald with his back to goal. Swivelling MacDonald slotted home to send the small travelling crowd into raptures.

Stamford School 1stXI will now play either Millfield School or Solihull School in the semi-finals of the U’18s HA Plate at the start of the summer term.
