In recent years the Burghley Park Cricket Club Cricket Week and Beer Festival has become one of the social events of the summer, and this year the club plan to make it even bigger.

Held, as always, in the first full week in July and kindly sponsored again by Hindmarch & Co (Stamford) the Cricket Week commences on Monday July 6 and builds throughout the week to the finale on Friday July 10

The week consists of all-day games on each day of the week, starting at 10am, and from 6pm every evening the ever-popular six-a-side competition takes place.

This year is the 57th year of the six-a-side competition or the ‘Burghley Sixes’ as it has become popularly known, and it is proving as popular as ever with crowds starting to get back to the numbers attending in those heady days of the 60’s.

The Stamford Mercury of the time reported crowds two or three deep around the boundary with numbers into the thousands.

Fifteen local teams are invited to take part, alongside a home team entry, with three games being played each evening starting at 6pm.

The semi-finals and final take place on the Friday evening, with a live band performing after the sixes final on the Friday evening.

In the last few years another highlight has been the introduction of a real ale festival in the Cabel UK beer tent.

At least 20 real ales are available each day and evening during the week and so it is worth visiting the Park during the week in order to sample the delights of some wonderful real ales from near and far while at the same time watching some exhilarating six hitting during the ‘sixes’ games.

To encourage the players, Buckles Solicitors will be awarding a ‘Champagne Moment’ each evening, with the winner receiving a bottle of champagne.

There are a couple of other new additions for this year’s Cricket Week and Beer Festival, with the introduction of Fancy Dress Friday, sponsored by Oakham Ales.

Fancy dress is encouraged for all spectators on Friday evening, with a prize for the best fancy dress.

A Spitfire and Hurricane flypast is also scheduled on the Friday.

So, what could be better on a balmy summer evening? Go on pay a visit and make the crowds even bigger this year.
