It has been a busy month for the anglers of Deeping St James Angling Club.
The weekend the club’s members enjoyed some lovely Autumn weather combined with some excellent catches when they fished Decoy Lakes Elm pool for their pairs match.
In the individual results it was Ray Torrington who took a convincing win with 162lb 3oz from peg 9, he started on the method feeder taking carp on nearly every cast using banded pellet before catching up in the water on a jigger rig.
Torrington then changed to the margin on meat to take barbel and some good carp to double figures.
In second place was Jon Bowland on corner peg 13 who had a frustrating start with fish taking him in to overhanging trees before he moved closer in to take fish up in the water to finish with 111lb 14 oz.
Third place went to Mark Footitt who was also on a corner on peg 1, he took most of his fish in the margin on paste to weigh 107lb 10oz.
Section wins went to Kevin Crompton and Mike Atherton.
In the Pairs Cup it was the committee members Ray Torrington (treasurer) and Andy Wilson (chairman) who took the honours with a combine weight of 218lb 5oz.
The runners up were: Mark Footitt and David Marzell 171lb 3.5oz, Vic Green and Jon Bowland 169lb 8oz, Mick Wright and Mike Atherton 167lb 12oz.
A week earlier Westwood Lakes near Boston was the venue for Deeping St James AC when they fished for the John Slack Memorial Trophy on Hawk Lake.
Most members found the fishing slow for the first half of the match except those using paste down the middle.
One such member using this method was Mark Footitt who finished with a comfortable lead to take his first trophy with the club in his first season.
After taking fish on paste he switched to luncheon meat in the margins to boost his weight to 63lb 8oz of carp and barbel from peg 12. In second place was Jon Bowland who also started on paste but later changed to the new ‘ Jigger’ rig to take fish up in the water on banded pellet to finish with 49lb 9oz from peg 18.
Close behind in third place was Ray Torrington on peg 19 with 48lb 9oz and section wins went to David Marzell and Mike Atherton.
On September 14 it was the fourth and final match of the South Holland Cup Series for Deeping St James AC members, and as with all this series, it was held on the match lake at North View Lakes, Gedney Hill.
The convincing winner on the day was Mike Atherton on peg 5 who caught most of his fish from his right hand margin on banded pellet and dead maggot to weigh 130lb 3oz.
In second place was Corby rod Dave Thorpe on peg 1 who caught fish on the method feeder and in the margins on dead maggot to weigh 72lb 14oz, and third place went to Ray Torrington on peg 2 using similar tactics to Thorpe to finish with 69lb 5oz. Section winners were Allan Beecher and Alan Jopling.
Before this match Jon Bowland was leading the series, but with a poor weight today saw him drop to second equal place with Mike Atherton both on 29pts, and it was Ray Torrington who took the trophy with 33pts.
At the start of the month on September 7 Deeping St James AC’s anglers travelled to Kingsland large lake for the Kevin Burkett Memorial Trophy match and Andy B Wilson took the honours for a second year running.
Fishing on corner peg 1, Wilson had a slow start and had to revert to a softer elastic with a puller kit on his pole, has he was pulling out of many good fish with his strong elastic. Fishing sweetcorn over hemp and pellet with fine meat particles in the margin he took fish to 10lbs to weigh 86lb 13oz. In second place from peg 11 was Mike Atherton fishing his favoured pellet waggler to weigh 81lb 13oz and fellow Colsterworth rod Mark Footitt took third place on peg 10 with 68lb 12oz of carp caught mainly on paste. Section winners were Nigel Briggs and Graham Page.
